RESEARCH INTEREST:

My post graduate research focuses on ancient DNA of goats during domestication in the Near East. Domestic animal genomics represents an exciting field as it impacts firmly on future food production and informs on the origins of farming and prehistoric human migrations and trade corridors. Despite their centrality in many agricultural economies, especially those of the poorest farmers, caprine genomics falls behind that of other ruminants. Also theirs was the first domestication in the Fertile Crescent, 11,000 years ago, and understanding this process would inform on a vital episode of human prehistory. My research will involve sequencing genomes from populations of both wild early domestic goats at either side of domestication in order to identify the important genes that are the drivers in this process. Comparisons with emerging modern goat genomes from around the world will also allow reconstruction of the past demography of this species and give an extra layer of inference about the human history of their herders. I am also interested in population genetics, the genetics of rare disease, and molecular evolution.
